STATE ELECTED OFFICIALS

None of the state officials appear to hold regular town halls or public meetings, although it appears they are responsive to requests.

 

State Senator Todd Nash, Republican from Wallowa County, Senate District 29.

 

The Oregon Senate is comprised of 30 members, all elected to 4-year terms. Senate Districts are designed to represent about 140,000 residents.

 

Elected in 2024 following the retirement of Senator Bill Hansell of Athena. Next election: 2028. Senator Nash previously served as a Wallowa County Commissioner and as chair of the Wolf Committee for the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association. He serves as vice-chair of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Wildfire, and also serves on the Senate Committees on Human Services and Housing Development, as well as the Joint Committee on Oregon-China Sister State.

State Representative Bobby Levy, Republican from Echo, House District 58.

 

The Oregon House has 60 members, elected to two-year terms and representing about 70,000 citizens.

 

First elected in 2020 after Rep Greg Baretto (R-Cove) chose not to seek re-election. Next election is 2026.

 

Representative Levy has long been involved in Oregon agriculture, serving as a Commissioner for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Bobby and friends founded the non-partisan Eastern Oregon Women’s Coalition, and in 2019 started the Eastern Oregon Economic Summit.

 

Representative Levy serves as vice-chair for the House Committee on Climate, Energy and the Environment, and serves on the Joint Committee on Tax Expenditures and the House Committees on Revenue and Agriculture, Land Use, Natural Resources and Water.

House District 58 encompasses Union, Wallowa and much of Umatilla County. (In Umatilla County, Hermiston and Milton-Freewater are part of House District 57, currently served by Rep Greg Smith.)

All elected statewide officials in Oregon are Democrats

 

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, Democrat from Portland.

 

Governor Kotek was elected in 2022. Next election is 2026. The Governor’s office is limited to two terms.

 

Governor Kotek served in the Oregon House of Representatives from 2007 to 2022, winning leadership roles as both Majority Leader and Speaker of the House. In 2013 she became the first openly lesbian Speaker of a state House.

 

One of Kotek’s first official acts was to declare a housing emergency for the State of Oregon. Governor Kotek’s priorities are Housing and Homelessness, Behavioral Health and Education and Early Learning.

Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read, elected in 2024 with the next election in 2028. Read formerly served in the Oregon House, 27th District representing parts of Multnomah and Washington Counties, and was elected Oregon State Treasurer in 2016. The Secretary of State position is term-limited to a total of 8 years over a 12-year period.

 

The Oregon Secretary of State is the successor to the Governor. The office has had more robust turnover due to several resignations and the death of former SOS Dennis Richardson while serving in office in 2019. The Secretary of State is responsible for overseeing elections, as well as managing the archives, audits and corporation divisions. The Secretary serves on the State Land Board, along with the Governor and the Treasurer.

The SOS website is a great resource for voter registration, checking election results and the like. It also features audits and has a tab for reporting misuse of state government resources.

Elizabeth Steiner, Oregon State Treasurer elected in 2024 following Tobias Read. Next election in 2028.

 

Oregon’s 30th Treasurer, Steiner is the first physician and the first woman elected to this post. She represented Senate District 17 (Parts of Multnomah and Washington Counties) in the state legislature and stepped down to run for Treasurer.

 

Oregon State Treasury manages Oregon’s investments, including managing the local government investment pool. Treasury also offers several tax-advantaged programs like ABLE Accounts for people with disabilities and college savings accounts.

 

The Treasury’s unclaimed property program returns millions of dollars to Oregon residents. In 2023 in Union County, 98 checks were claimed for a total of more than $28,000.

Attorney General Dan Rayfield, elected in 2024, preceded by Ellen Rosenblum. Next election in 2028.

 

Rayfield is a Democrat and served in the Oregon House from 2015 through 2024, representing District 16 (Benton County). He served as Speaker of the House from 2022 through March 2024.

 

The Purpose of the Oregon DOJ: In addition to providing legal representation to state government, the DOJ advocates for and protects all Oregonians, especially the most vulnerable, such as children and seniors. The Oregon DOJ and its nine divisions are tasked with running programs related to child support »charitable activities », district attorney assistance, crime victim compensation » and consumer protection ». The nearest DOJ office to Union County is their child support office in Pendleton.
